The Enderun Colleges Scholarly Review is a journal promoting values, advocating the social upliftment of people, enriching Philippine culture, and adding existing knowledge in the field. Our goal is to continue to be a space where our faculty members and non-teaching staff and students could undertake continuing research to promote the above goals of the department.
Since research is an integral part of the school’s academic and professional development, the members of the faculty and the non-teaching staff are encouraged to take the lead by providing them statistical assistance and administration support.
Our faculty is driven to embark on a research that has a national impact just like the BPO Attrition in the Philippines; Determining Factors and Trends by Salipsip, King, Llanera and Lucero wherein the study concluded that the reasons in joining a BPO company are having good benefits, good working environment, flexibility on time, no specific educational requirement, alternative lifestyle, no age limit and the fact that some of the graduates cannot find works in line with their profession, they resorted to BPO companies. Attrition, on the other hand, is commonly due to the night shift, physical and psychological strain, policies and procedures, lack of training, job mismatch, limited time for personal life and unapproved or sufficient work leaves.
Philippine culture is interestingly studied by Bel Castro in her paper entitled To Eat Or Not To Eat?: The Hidden Messages in “Kain Tayo!”, A Ritual Offer to Share Food in which it was concluded that social embarrassment plays a huge factor in the decision making regarding the offer to share food. One should also understand Filipino virtues and etiquettes in relation with dining to offer proper ways in declining offer to share food.
Technology has a huge impact on every sector of the industry, the paper by Nanca, Salipsip and King entitled Impact of Technology on the Tourism and Hospitality Industry: Perspective from the Enderun Tourism & Hospitality Tech Summit shows that most of the respondents preferred online booking rather than going to travel agents, however, virtual tours and ocular visit are both favorably preferred. Online reviews thru social media are more preferred rather than personal referral and website evaluation just like using GPS tour rather than using a printed map. While technology is favored in the marketing system, payment on-site is chosen by many rather than online payment. Online chatbots too are overtaken by most respondents who chose phone or mobile inquiry, and they still preferred to have a front desk customer service rather than front desk-less or keyless entry.
Another interesting study included in our journal is entitled Community Empowerment of the Manobo Tribe through Farm-to-Market Road in Bukidnon by Dela Cruz and Tan. This paper shed light on the present situations of the Manobo in San Fernando, Bukidnon. It revealed that some of their cultures are starting to diminish due to the absence of FMR that has caused them isolation; thus, they feel unwanted. They stopped to wear traditional attires to blend in with the urban people as they were sometimes ridiculed due to lack of awareness and acceptance. They need to travel grueling hours just to get to the lowland to obtain income. With this, it was concluded how important farm to market road is to improve the lives of our indigenous people of Manobo tribe.
Book Review of Carlos Arnaldo is included in this issue entitled SAPIENS: telling the story of the human race. It is interesting as much as the book itself which has an opening statement: “After all the studies one has made in life, why would anyone want to read the history of the human race again? Do we need to review archeology, biology, and physics to do this? And who is Harari?”
