Considering how the Philippines is an archipelago surrounded by water, it seems almost impossible for the country to be facing the risk of a water crisis. Yet, research conducted by the Enderun Research Department in 2018 showed that the country is already experiencing one.
A water crisis in the country has far-reaching consequences for those in agriculture, industry, and the general public.
In the same study, the Enderun Research Department surveyed participants of the Water Sustainability Summit 2018, which showed that 80.95% of survey respondents were aware of the looming water crisis in the country. Additionally, 60% of those who claimed were aware of the water crisis reported experiencing water scarcity, which may be the reason for the high levels of awareness.

Signs of the Impending Water Crisis
The survey showed that 59 percent of those who experienced water scarcity did so in the form of low water pressure, while 37 percent reported experiencing an interruption of water supply. These issues, unfortunately, are quite common throughout the Philippines, including in developed areas, such as Metro Manila, due to population density.
The water crisis isn’t just reflected in the availability of water. It is also manifested in terms of the quality of available water:
Securing the Future
A full-blown water crisis in the Philippines could spell disaster for most as the effects of a water crisis will undoubtedly have a trickle effect on factors such as food prices, energy prices, and the like. As such, the results of this study are not meant to scare anyone, but rather, to start discussions about water conservation practices, like rainwater collection or wastewater treatment for re-use in irrigation, becoming more widespread.
